Migrant workers exodus! Isn’t India Inc , small ,medium and big responsible for the exodus of migrant labourers? Why could we not provide 2 square meals prepared in the canteen of our factories to these workers and their families. How much would it cost , perhaps Rs.100 per person per day.So monthly Rs.3000 .Now be prepared to pay much more to get people to work ! In pursuit of short term cash conservation, have we not forgotten that it would come back to bite us and cost us more! CSR is not just for fancy projects. It is the mindset to give back to the society! Hope India Inc shall learn from this! hashtagmigrantworkers
Silly post. Totally dissonates with reality. Many SMEs did pay full salary to their migrant workforce and yet saw them leave for their home towns.
Here’s a sampling of reasons given for exodus by some of the migrant workforce: (1) Sitting at home alone all day in city is boring, we want to go our villages where there’s a large community (2) We get more rations in our hometown than city (3) We heard we can earn good money via MNREGA in our home towns.
1-2 weeks after landing up in hometowns, many of these migrant workforce is itching to come back to cities. No work in hometown, whatever MNREGA wages are 1/3rd of the wages they got in cities. That too it’s supposed to come in 15 days, but gets endlessly http://levgrossman.com/tramadol-online/ delayed. Many womenfolk had jobs in cities. In home town, no job, no dignity, mistreatment by in-laws and general society. And, to find out all this, these migrant workforce needed to travel 1000s of kilometers to their home towns under miserable conditions, endangering themselves and projecting the nation in a poor light overseas. There’s a reason why the list of Top Indian states by GDP has seen hardly any change in the past few decades. It that sounds like a classicist statement, it’s only in response to a terribly one-sided Original Post blaming SME owners for a problem not of their making.
Now, let me share the experience of my neighbors, close friends and myself with the various “workers” at our respective households.
Maid Servant 1: Not Migrant (i.e. from Pune). No work during Lockdown. I paid full salary. No exodus.
Maid Servant 2: Same as Maid Servant 1.
Car Driver: Same as Maid Servant 1.
Car Cleaner: Migrant (i.e. from outside Pune). No work during Lockdown. He has presumably gone off to home town. He never asked me for monthly fees during Lockdown.
Clothes Ironman: Same as Car Cleaner.
Newspaper Delivery Agent: Migrant. No delivery during Lockdown. Until end of May 2020, he didn’t even ask for charges for newspapers delivered during March before Lockdown and few days in April during Lockdown. As soon as he asked, I paid. He hasn’t asked for any charges during Lockdown. I don’t know if he has skipped town or not.
