It was the late 1990s or so. ADM was fined by US government for price fixing lysine, a food additive. Memory serves the fine was $200 million. As most fines go, it was puny in comparison to the company’s size or exploits. Fortune magazine closed its article on the investigation with the following line:

“Not only does crime pay, it’s just the cost of doing business.”

For some reason, I’m reminded of the closing line of the FORTUNE magazine article on Archer Daniels Midland lysine price fixing scandal in the mid 1990s:

“Not only does crime pay, it’s just the cost of doing business.”
