{"id":550,"date":"2010-02-21T04:54:29","date_gmt":"2010-02-20T18:54:29","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/sketharaman.com\/blog\/?p=550"},"modified":"2010-02-21T21:16:05","modified_gmt":"2010-02-21T11:16:05","slug":"fmcg-manufacturers-adopt-the-if-you-cant-beat-them-join-em-policy","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sketharaman.com\/blog\/2010\/02\/21\/fmcg-manufacturers-adopt-the-if-you-cant-beat-them-join-em-policy\/","title":{"rendered":"FMCG Manufacturers Adopt The &#8220;If You Can&#8217;t Beat Them, Join &#8216;Em&#8221; Policy"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>According to a recent <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/economictimes.indiatimes.com\/news\/news-by-industry\/services\/retailing\/Food-brands-and-retailers-Private-labels-get-branded-push\/articleshow\/5562342.cms\" target=\"_blank\">report<\/a><\/strong>, FMCG companies have started manufacturing store brands for leading retailers in India and elsewhere.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/sketharaman.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/02\/fmcg01.png\" target=\"_blank\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/sketharaman.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/02\/fmcg04.png\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-578\" title=\"fmcg04_500\" src=\"http:\/\/sketharaman.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/02\/fmcg04.png\" alt=\"fmcg04_500\" width=\"500\" height=\"132\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>As I&#8217;ve <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/sketharaman.com\/blog\/2009\/01\/20\/tips-for-round-2-for-indian-organized-retail\/\" target=\"_blank\">written in the past<\/a><\/strong>, store brands &#8211; also called <em>house<\/em> <em>brands<\/em> or\u00a0<em>retail private labels<\/em> &#8211; are a powerful weapon in the armor of organized retailers to compete with <em>kirana<\/em>\u00a0stores\u00a0(India&#8217;s\u00a0version of mom-and-pop stores) that\u00a0control more than 85% of the Indian market for retail goods. Store brands are common in\u00a0milk, juice,\u00a0eggs, medicine, soaps, lentils,\u00a0stationery, apparel\u00a0and other fast moving items. They&#8217;re traditionally\u00a0&#8211; but no longer necessarily &#8211; packed in\u00a0plain boxes or bags and\u00a0bear\u00a0nondescript brand names owned by retail companies if not the name of the retailer itself. Since retailers incur little or no advertising costs\u00a0for selling\u00a0store brands, they can afford to price them significantly lower than leading FMCG brands, even at a comparable quality.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/sketharaman.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/02\/fmcg02.png\" target=\"_blank\"><\/a><a href=\"http:\/\/sketharaman.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/02\/fmcg03.png\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-576\" title=\"fmcg03_250\" src=\"http:\/\/sketharaman.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/02\/fmcg03.png\" alt=\"fmcg03_250\" width=\"250\" height=\"163\" \/><\/a>Now, if a store brand delivers the same quality as an FMCG brand at a\u00a0lower price, it&#8217;s sure\u00a0to take market share away from the latter. As a result, store brands have traditionally been viewed as rivals to FMCG brands. By manufacturing store brands, FMCG companies seem to be consorting with their traditional enemies. It would be interesting to understand their undelying motive for\u00a0doing so. Is it, as the official line goes, to keep out other players and fuel upsell of their own brands in other stores? Or, are there deeper factors at play?\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/sketharaman.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/02\/fmcg02_250.png\"><\/a><a href=\"http:\/\/sketharaman.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/02\/fmcg05.png\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-589 alignleft\" title=\"fmcg05_250\" src=\"http:\/\/sketharaman.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/02\/fmcg05.png\" alt=\"fmcg05_250\" width=\"250\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a>During the recent recession, as in the previous ones, consumers reportedly switched to value brands. This\u00a0would&#8217;ve resulted in store brands gaining market share at the cost of FMCG brands and in under utilization of production capacities at FMCG companies.\u00a0\u00a0Unlike in the previous recessions, according to this <a href=\"http:\/\/sketharaman.com\/blog\/2009\/12\/24\/mass-brands-can-acquire-and-retain-customers-of-class-brands-in-this-recession\/\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>recent McKinsey report<\/strong><\/a>,\u00a0consumers are <em>not <\/em>likely to return to their free spending days even when the economy recovers. Which means that FMCG manufacturers&#8217; return to full production capacity is a long way off. This realization could&#8217;ve triggered the move by FMCG companies to start manufacturing store brands for their traditional rivals as a stop-gap measure to improve their capacity utilization, even if it meant adoping the &#8220;if you can&#8217;t beat them, join &#8217;em&#8221; policy.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>According to a recent report, FMCG companies have started manufacturing store brands for leading retailers in India and elsewhere.
